The Magical Damselfly

sunflowers, bugs, garden 8-16-17 024 - copieDamselfly – Damselflies are one of my favorite critters to capture in the garden. They are truly fairies in disguise!
These beautiful insects are of the suborder of Zygoptera, in the order Odonata. They are very similar to dragonflies, but are smaller in size. When at rest, most species fold their wings along their body. Damselflies eat small, soft-bodied insects like aphids and mosquitoes. Bonus! These stunning creatures are found on every continent except Antarctica.

The Gray Tree Frog

photo jun 03, 8 35 17 pmThe Gray Tree Frog: is a species native to much of the eastern United States and southeastern Canada. These magical creatures have the ability to camouflage their lumpy skin, from gray to green. This tree frog is found in woodland ponds and swamps, and is capable of surviving freezing temperatures.  These adorable creatures will congregate around house lights, at night, to enjoy a tasty insect feast!

The black garden ant (lasius niger), also known as the common black ant, lives in large colonies containing 4,000 – 7,000 workers and 1 queen. The queen can live up to 15 years, while the worker ants live to around 4 years of age. These garden friends are 9mm long, have a black glossy color, and a slight brown stripe on their abdomen.

The Blue Morpho Butterfly

photo feb 28, 2 14 32 pm_preview
This stunning butterfly is among the largest in the world, with wings spanning from 5-8 inches. It is found in the tropical forests of Mexico, Central America and South America.
The undersides of the Morpho’s wings are a dull brown, with many eye spots. These provide camouflage against predators.
Unfortunately, the Blue Morphos have a life span of only 115 days, which means most of their time is spent eating and reproducing.

The Bee and the Dandelion

dsc_0139-001 - copie
Keep in mind, Dandelions serve a very important purpose – bee food! If you are considering spraying harsh chemicals on your lawn, please consider the safety of the bees. These tiny creature are so very important! Think about it…bumbles humbly and diligently work each and every day, and for what? Us! All of their labors are for others…

The Bumble Bee & Zinnia

9-18-17 111 - copie-1
Bumble Bees are eusocial, which means they are truly social. They live in a hive with a single reproductive queen and multiple sterile workers.  Unlike honeybee queens, a bumble bee queen lives for only a single year. This cycle keeps bumble hives much smaller than hives of honeybees. Most mature bumble bee colonies consist of fewer than 200 bees.

The Bumble Bee and Zinnia

Recent studies have found that bumble bees can not only fly at cold temperatures, but they can also fly at extremely high elevations.  How does 500 feet higher than Mt. Everest sound!  How scientific!

The Chinese Praying Mantis

10-3-17 029_preview-1
Praying mantises are a wonderful addition to your garden, due to the fact that they eat insects!  We are lucky to have two species that live in Michigan: the European and Chinese praying mantis.  Their egg masses overwinter and hatch late May or early June.  They are most noticed in the Fall, once reaching their adult size.
