Time to Wander…

This is the time of year  that I feel pulled to get away.  The forest is calling and I want to put on my hikers and escape reality, for just a short while.  At the same time, this is one of the most difficult seasons to leave the farm…

We never travel during the Winter, EVER.  Who would be crazy enough to volunteer to farm sit 2 horses, 4 goats, 2 dogs, 8 cats, 24 ducks and 80+ chickens…and deal with frozen water and frigid temperatures?  NO ONE in their right mind! The Summer is just as challenging, but in a different way. Although there is no frozen water to contend with or temperatures that make your face hurt, there are crops!  We grow approximately 80 different varieties of fruits, vegetables and herbs that require daily harvesting and watering, at a minimum.    Yet, Mother Nature is calling and I must listen…

I have tried to “fight the pull” for years, always making excuses about not enough time, there is too much to do, etc.  I have found that when I don’t think I have time for something is exactly when I need to make time for it.  For example, when I say I don’t have time to exercise is when I NEED to exercise the most.  When I feel like I am running in a thousand different directions and don’t have time for meditation and yoga is when I need to stop, focus, listen and breathe the most.  Learning to listen to the mind, body and soul is so important.  It knows exactly what you need…  Just close your eyes and listen…  You will never be disappointed.

With that being said, Wifey and I are going to take a few days away from the farm and unplug, hike and kayak.  I remind myself that nothing on the farm is ever finished.  There will never be a day when I will I stand back, with my hands on my hips and announce, “There…we are finished!”  THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN!  Why?  Because we are crazy, driven and passionate women!   Let me put this in a little perspective for you…

This is a non-project year, yet we are building new hoop houses.  We said we would not purchase any new plants for the flower gardens until the potager is completed, yet we ended up greenhouse shopping this past weekend and have over 40 new additions to add to our gardens.  We promised one another that this would be a non-bird year, yet we somehow ended up with 8 new ducks and lots of news chickens.  We only have ourselves to blame.  What can I say, we love our life!  We live by the motto, “Do What You Love, Love What You Do!”

So, next to the dead of Winter, right now is the worst time to escape reality.  But, as I listen to the pull, I know that now is the time I need to escape the most.  I need to UNPLUG, UNWIND and RESET.  For me, spending time in nature is healing energy.

Here is one final thought and something I need to remind myself of daily…

“Nature does not hurry and yet everything is accomplished.”

Note: For the next 5 days, all of my post will be pre-scheduled, for I will be where there is no cell service!  I look forward to catching up with all of you on Wednesday evening!
