4 Voices

I have had a passion for folk music, as long as I can remember.  Although I was born in the early 70s, I feel like my soul belongs to the 60s. Growing up, I was the kid listening to Joni Mitchell, Peter, Paul and Mary, Gordon Lightfoot (love you, Linda!) and Don McLean, to name a few.  Although, I love almost all types of music, folk music resonates with me, most of all.  They say, you are what you listen to!

When I found out that “Four Voices”: Joan Baez, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers (The Indigo Girls) would be touring 10 different cities this summer, I knew I had to attended!   Fortunately enough, one of those cities just happened to be Grand Rapids, right here in West Michigan!

Wifey and I have been attending Indigo Girls concerts together for over 10 years.  If the Indigo Girls were playing within a 6 hour radius, we were planning a road trip, with their entire music collection playing on repeat, during the trip!  In the beginning of our relationship, we bonded over these songs.  Amy and Emily tell such beautiful stories and share such powerful messages through their lyrics.  We connected with their joys, their struggles and their messages.  The music of the Indigo Girls is a blessing and a gift that I will never take for granted.

This event was even more special!  Not only would we be listening to the Indigo Girls, but two of the most inspirational folk artists of all time…Joan Baez and Mary Chapin Carpenter!  Music doesn’t get much better than that!  Their voices were magical and their message was powerful!

Joan Baez

Joan Baez, age 76, was brilliant!  Her soprano voice was as distinctive as ever and filled with such grace.   All four of these talented women have an unwavering dedication to social and politcal activism, which loudly and proudly rang through the crowd. These songs delivered a message…they had meaning…they were filled with passion.  To experience these gifted women together, on one stage, was a moment in time I will never forget.

And yes, I had to have the concert t-shirt!

Now excuse me while I put on some bell bottoms, turn on my Classic Folk music playlist and go tree hugging!

Love Yourself…Embrace Yourself…Just Be You!

  1. I really like Bon Iver. Have you heard of it? They are an American-based (if I’m not mistaken) folk band. Now you made want to listen to these talented 4 ladies. Folk and activism ❤ I’m afraid Linda will sit this one out. Hahaha

  2. I’m a huge fan of folk music too, Roda. Don McClean is my go to guy. I was born in the early 90s but have always felt my soul and ears belong to an earlier time! xx

  3. If you had to go to a folk concert, you picked the right one. I saw Mary Chapin Carpenter and concert and really liked her. Ok, I’ll wait for you to get back up after you fell out of your chair. Her rendition of Mark Knopfler’s The Bug was outstanding. See? Thought I was going to moan and kvetch didn’t you?
